RuPaul Returns Home: A San Diego Homecoming Takes Over Ingram Plaza

Insomniac brings RuPaul, BAMBII B2B LSDXOXO, Chippy Nonstop and Alex Chapman to San Diego for a landmark night at Liberty Station

There are homecomings, and then there is RuPaul returning to San Diego.

On October 17, the San Diego native and global pop-culture icon returns home for a special performance at Ingram Plaza, leading an eclectic Insomniac bill alongside BAMBII B2B LSDXOXO, Chippy Nonstop and Alex Chapman.

The night also represents a first of its own: this will mark Insomniac's first event at Ingram Plaza, the expansive open-air event lawn inside Liberty Station in San Diego's Point Loma neighborhood.

For RuPaul, however, the setting makes the evening particularly fitting. Long before RuPaul's Drag Race turned his name into a global institution, RuPaul emerged from nightlife and music. He became a prominent figure in New York City's nightclub scene before “Supermodel (You Better Work)” helped propel him into the mainstream, and across a career spanning decades, he has written and recorded an extraordinary 18 studio albums.

That musical history makes an Insomniac stage a surprisingly natural home.

RuPaul has previously appeared on Insomniac stages at Day Trip in the Park and Day Trip Long Beach, as well as Echostage in Washington, D.C. This time, however, the story comes full circle: RuPaul is bringing the party back to the city where his story began.

And the supporting lineup makes this much more than a nostalgia-driven homecoming. BAMBII B2B LSDXOXO, Chippy Nonstop and Alex Chapman represent a contemporary club culture where electronic music, fashion, queer expression and underground nightlife increasingly collide—the same cultural intersections RuPaul helped push into the mainstream decades ago.

That is precisely what makes October 17 interesting.

RuPaul's career has never fit neatly into a single category. Drag artist, recording artist, television personality, author, actor and nightclub provocateur have all existed simultaneously. In an era where the boundaries separating pop music, dance music and queer nightlife have become increasingly porous, revisiting RuPaul primarily as a dance-music performer feels less like looking backward than acknowledging just how far ahead of the curve he was.

For Highwire Daze, we're particularly interested in seeing what happens when that history meets the current generation of club music—and what RuPaul's return looks and sounds like on home turf.

With Insomniac entering Ingram Plaza for the first time and one of San Diego's most internationally recognizable cultural exports returning home to headline it, this isn't simply another stop on a touring calendar.

San Diego gets RuPaul back for the night—and this one feels personal.
